Experiment 2

In this short clip we tried to experiment with close ups of a piano. In this clip we have made many errors such as; the camera not being tilted enough and the hands are out of focus. Knowing this in our next trial we shall correct these mistakes. We shall try positioning the camera vertically instead of horizontally to avoid cropping out parts of the hands.

Experiment 1

We have filmed this short clip to attempt to achieve blurred focus that we will later use in our product to create a romantic atmosphere. We will improve this skill overtime to create a focus pull.

Task10: production schedule

The production schedule

Our production schedule was used to give us a clear idea of what we wished to produce as well as allowed us to use our time productively. Although we only used the original storyboard as vague guidance, the planned shots made us much more organized and focused as a group.

Research into Gabrielle Aplin

Research into the chosen artist Gabrielle Aplin
Here is a brief summary about the artist we have chosen and some reasons explaining our choices for the song and casting...
Bio.
Gabrielle Aplin is a 21 year old British singer-songwriter. She started her career in the year 2008 and has since sang singles which gained her mainstream attention (‘Please don’t say you love me’ & ‘The power of love’) and produced an album titled ‘English Rain’ with some very successful tracks such as ‘Panic cord’ and ‘Home’; the latter of which we have decided to produce a music video for.

Attributes
As Gabrielle Aplin is a young, female artist, finding an actress for our music video was extremely easy as we simply had one of the members from our group do the performance. We have chosen Alannah for this role as she has had previous experience with acting (GCSE drama) and she is also keen on singing in real life; this was an advantage as she was able to ding along to the song and make the lip syncing look more believable over simple miming. In addition, both have some similarities in looks and we hoped that Lana’s attributes would make the voice fit her and make the music video more believable for the audience.

Here is a picture of Gabrielle Aplin and our chosen actress Alannah Hill.

Song Genres
The songs Aplin sings come under Indie, Pop, Country and Folk music genres. In all of our questionnaires at least one of those genres has come up on top and we thought as a group this was a good reason to cover one of her songs.

Music video style
Aplin’s videos always open with a short clip before the song start. This provides a setting to the usually storyline based narrative shots intertwined with performance shots. We have agreed that although making an intro to the song would be too difficult, we wished to follow this convention and decided we would add a short clip before the song as well. We also agreed that the short clip would be used to display information about the song, as from our surveys it would seem that most of the audience preferred the titles to go at the beginning rather than at the end of a video.

Locations for music video

One of our main locations will be at Tamworth train station where we will get shots of the artist waiting for a train. We will also film around Birmingham city centre, mostly in areas around the Bullring and down New street and in Centenary Square.

Task 9 - Casting

Singer/actress  - This role will be played by Lana Hill. She has studied drama at GCSE so she has a familiarity with acting. She is also a singer which means that she will be more comfortable with the role and miming. She is also a similar age to the target audience so they will be able to relate to her.
She will be the only person that’s starring in the video, and although it doesn't make it as exciting, it produces a very natural-like atmosphere. The viewer wont get distracted by others in the music video as we want the focus to be on her.
Props- microphone - a microphone will be used during performance shots.
locket - a locket with a photograph inside of her and the person she loves.
Guitar - this will be used because a guitar is played in the song, we will get shots of the artist                                          playing the guitar in the music video
Costume – she will wear casual clothes such as jeans and a jacket throughout the music video as this is something that the target audience can easily see themselves wearing and can therefore relate to the singer.

Task 8 - Final proposal - By Emily, Lana and Renya

The target audience of our music video is expected to be mostly composed of teenagers, mostly female, from a middle/working class background. This is because we have chosen a  song with a subtle message of finding yourself in this world and it has hints of a love interest. The artist is very young herself and sings about what a lot of teenage girls might find very moving and relatable.

The TV channel we would expect to be best known for playing our music video would be MTV. This is a TV channel that is popular with young people because it plays popular songs that the target audience listen to.The channel also show TV programmes usually including young people around this age group, (e.g Geordie Shore).  The music video could also be promoted through radio as some of the popular radio stations have their own TV channels. This can be addressed by having this song played on the radio to attract a wider audience. The audience could then go onto radio's channel to then find the music video for the song that they have heard.

The genre of our music video can be interpreted as country, indie pop and acoustic. The acoustic side of the song encourages a performance-based music video while the lyrics imply a narrative based story.

The actress chosen to present the singer in this story narrative is a teenage girl as young females will be able to relate to a character of similar traits, whilst males will be attracted to her. Furthermore, the target audience may view someone like this as a desirable role model. Seeing someone like them traveling around and living out their life may be inspirational to teenagers who are worried about their future and encourage them to make the best of what they've got. The small love aspect of the video is also interesting and relatable to audiences of all ages. It is a popular theme for music videos, however ours has been made more appealing by the fact there is more subtext to the story.

The music video will have two noticeable colour schemes. One in the daytime and one during the night. This has been mainly done to present the progress of time and her journey in to finding herself. However, at the same time this contrast of the lighting can underline the contrast between the city life and what the female actress feels her 'home' is e.g. with her lover or somewhere she feels she can be free from the busy lifestyle.

The camera angles will consist of a variety of shots such as panning and tracking of the main images to show movement and the passing of time. There will be a lot of close ups of the girl to really portray her mood to the audience and also of natural elements such as flowers to emphasise the beauty of them and the happiness she once felt.  There will also be over the shoulder shots to let the audience see what the girl is looking at. Long and mid shots will show the audience her body language and what she is wearing and show her in the environment that she is in.  The camera person will also experiment a lot with the focusing on the camera, for example; completely blurring out a shot and then refocusing.

Task 7 - Role Allocation

Director-  We have all decided to be directors as we all had ideas we wanted to include and through making the role of the director collective we managed to corporate all of our ideas in to making the best product we could.

Writer Renya was chosen to be the writers she does English and has the best sense of what would flow well chronologically and make for the best love story. She had a big input on the storyboard as the writer although we all agreed on things together.

Cameraperson Emily was given the role of the cameraperson as she already does photography and is the most knowledgeable with the equipment out of everybody in the group. She would be the one who would also have the best idea of what type of shot would look the best and how to angle things to make them look good.

Editor- Alannah was the one who took the role of the editor because it needs someone who knew what would look nice and how to make transitions look good. She was the best for this because she does art and is very creative with her ideas.

Despite all of is having been allocated a specific role largely based around our subject choices, we all predict to do an equal amount of work in each sections and work together in order to all have an input on the final project and to develop our skills in each area.
