Task 2: Todrov's Theory

By Renya Szcodrak

Todrov’s theory of narrative.
Todorov’s theory of Equilibrium and Disequilibrium is a theory which proposes five stages the narrative has to go through for the audience to understand the story better.
In the Short film ‘black hole’ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5_Msrdg3Hk)the story goes through the five stages as followed

Equilibrium: The man goes through a normal day at the office. This is expressed through usual sounds and a close up on the man’s bored face.

Disruption: The printer stops working and the man kicks it to start it up again. A white page with a black circle is printed. Through a close up on the man’s confused face we can tell this is an unexpected event and therefore disrupts the ‘normality’.  The strange buzzing sound portrays this further.

Realisation: The man puts the page aside ignoring it until his cup falls through the black hole. Mesmerised, the man puts his hand through and pulls the cup out again. He then realises that the page is actually a ‘black hole’.

Repairing the damage: The man adapts to the change quickly, he uses the black hole as a means of getting through barriers to get things e.g. getting chocolate from the vending machine, opening locked doors, taking money out of a safe….

Restoration/New equilibrium: As the man gets greedier and slightly more crazed he goes through the hole in to the safe. The page then falls to the ground no longer supported by the man evidently locking him in. This results in a ‘new normality’ for the man.
